How to get your content quoted by ChatGPT
AI tools favour a specific shape of content — direct questions, clear answers, short topical chunks. How to restructure a page so it gets cited in AI answers, not skipped.
One change to how you structure a page, and a real shot at being the source an AI tool cites instead of skips.
A few issues back we added an llms.txt file so AI crawlers could find your best content. This week: how to write that content so they actually quote it.
Because here's the shift — ranking #1 on Google matters less when a third of your potential visitors are getting their answer straight from ChatGPT or Perplexity without clicking anything. The new game isn't just "rank". It's "be the sentence the AI repeats".
What AI tools actually quote
LLMs favour content that's factual, structured, and easy to lift in a clean chunk. In practice that means:
- Ask the question, then answer it — use the real question as a heading, and give a direct answer in the first sentence underneath.
- Short topical chunks — roughly 200-300 words per idea, each able to stand alone as a quotable unit.
- Clear H2/H3 structure so a machine can tell where one idea ends and the next begins.
- Standalone data points — a stat or specific number is far more "citable" than a vague generalisation.
- An FAQ block for the obvious follow-ups — AI tools lift these almost verbatim when the wording matches the query.
The one change to make this week
Pick your single best-performing page. Rewrite its opening so the first sentence directly answers the question implied by the heading — no throat-clearing first. Then add three FAQ-style questions at the bottom, each with a short, self-contained answer. That's the shape AI tools currently favour, and it's a change you can make without touching anything else on the page.
Evidence
The data backs this up: pages with a clean heading hierarchy and schema markup earn roughly 2.8x higher citation rates from AI tools, and 73% of ChatGPT-cited pages include at least one bulleted list (Search Engine Land, 2025 ChatGPT citation study). Front-loading matters too — 44% of ChatGPT citations come from the first third of a page's content, which is exactly why the answer-first structure above works.
